國際策展人:Edric Ong Liang Bin、Manjari Nirula 臺灣策展人:陳婉麗、江明親 展覽時間:2018年5月4日~8月19日(南投) 展覽地點:國立臺灣工藝研究發展中心 工藝設計館 【續展】 展覽時間:2018年8月30日~2019年1月27日(臺北) 展覽地點:國立臺灣工藝研究發展中心 臺北當代設計分館 1st Exhibition 2018.05.05 – 08.19 Craft Design Hall , NTCRI, Nantou 2nd Exhibition 2018.09.07 – 2019.01.27 NTCRI, Taipei Branch Even inhibited by endless earth-born constraints, human beings have always pined for immortality. The image of the Tree of Life connects souls across time and space. We see the Ṭūbā tree in the Quran. The Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. The Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge in the Bible. Pantao of Wang Mu (sacred peach of the Queen Mother Goddess) in the Han Chinese belief. The Gunungan that opens an Indonesian Wayan kulit (shadow puppet). Numerous varieties of expressions of Tree of Life across South Asia. The Tree of Life of Malaysian Ibans that connects this world and the upper one. The Tree of Life condenses and symbolizes our celebration, prayer, submission and appreciation in the face of immortality. The specially curated, internationally touring Tree of Life Exhibition brings 67 pieces of traditional crafts and contemporary creation from 16 countries in Asia and beyond to showcase diversified beliefs and artistic representations of ‘Tree of Life’ across cultures, communities, histories, and geographies. The artists harvested materials, fiber, lacquer, metal, wood, bamboo and clay, from the lands they are rooted in. In the shape of trees or with metaphoric spinning, they try to respond to endless calls for immortality from mortal souls. Starting in Malaysia, visiting India, Hawaii and Canada in past three years, finally arriving Taiwan in 2018, the exhibition has inspired diversified interactions across the soils it set foot. Trees may not be the typical motif of Taiwanese crafts. Nevertheless the soil they are rooted in and the symbolic aspiration for the heaven they represent are common passion shared by all artists. In silent dialogues with artworks from South, Southeast, East and Central Asia, as well as other continents, Tree of Life Exhibition in Taiwan presents a space connecting human beings to immortality, beyond the limitation of time and locality.

Formosa: A New Layer Taiwan meets Yii at Révélations Biennial

  • Formosa: A New Layer Taiwan meets Yii is a retrospective exhibition of a decade of local and international craft, art and design collaborations with Taiwan, supported by the Taiwanese Cultural Center in Paris, the NTCRI (National Taiwanese Craft Research and Development Institute), the Taiwanese Ministry of Culture and Spazio Nobile / Pro Materia. In collaboration with: Lobmeyr (AT), Lyngby Porcelæn (DK), Thalie Lab (BE). Formosa: A New Layer Taiwan refers to the ‘Beautiful Island’ (at the time of the Ilha Formosa when the island was occupied by the Portuguese in the middle of the 16th century). It bridges Eastern and Western cultures. This forest-cloaked land that is Taiwan has a strong character and its crafts and qualities are very specific, unique and distinctive including some strong in nuances from various cultures such as the ones of the Dutch, the Chinese and the Japanese. Formosa is a title which embraces history, culture, art and design, and the island as a place for creation, including rich dialogues, exchanges and explorations of creative craft and design from here and abroad. What Yii did in this myth for all China and Taiwan, the modern Taoist priest, still does it for the local community: he recycles the “old energy” (ku- ch’i), and so gives the community a new breath. It is often called the “three virtualities” (san-ts’ai), which refers to the cultural triad of heaven, earth, and man.
