2018 The Transformation of Community Craftsmanship

Formosa: A New Layer Taiwan meets Yii at Révélations Biennial

  • Formosa: A New Layer Taiwan meets Yii is a retrospective exhibition of a decade of local and international craft, art and design collaborations with Taiwan, supported by the Taiwanese Cultural Center in Paris, the NTCRI (National Taiwanese Craft Research and Development Institute), the Taiwanese Ministry of Culture and Spazio Nobile / Pro Materia. In collaboration with: Lobmeyr (AT), Lyngby Porcelæn (DK), Thalie Lab (BE). Formosa: A New Layer Taiwan refers to the ‘Beautiful Island’ (at the time of the Ilha Formosa when the island was occupied by the Portuguese in the middle of the 16th century). It bridges Eastern and Western cultures. This forest-cloaked land that is Taiwan has a strong character and its crafts and qualities are very specific, unique and distinctive including some strong in nuances from various cultures such as the ones of the Dutch, the Chinese and the Japanese. Formosa is a title which embraces history, culture, art and design, and the island as a place for creation, including rich dialogues, exchanges and explorations of creative craft and design from here and abroad. What Yii did in this myth for all China and Taiwan, the modern Taoist priest, still does it for the local community: he recycles the “old energy” (ku- ch’i), and so gives the community a new breath. It is often called the “three virtualities” (san-ts’ai), which refers to the cultural triad of heaven, earth, and man. Formosa Collection at Révélations Biennial National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute/ the Taiwanese Cultural Center in Paris /Spazio Nobile / Pro Materia invite you to Révélations, International Fine Craft & Creation Biennal /Biennale internationale des Métiers d’art et création from 23 until 26 May 2019 at Grand Palais in Paris, France. (From Nature To Function – Exhibition of Folk Crafts And Four Seasons)

Crafts are objects created by the rhythmic interaction between nature and people. In the past, people often put too much emphasis on the process of how craft works are made and what they are made from but they neglected the life cycle of the materials themselves and their natural environments. In facts, people’s social lives are heavily affected by the life cycle of materials; people need to live their lives in accordance with the natural environment and make good use of the resources provided by nature to make their lives better. “Following Heavenly Laws”, “Down to Earth” and “The Seasonal Crafts for the People in Taiwan” are the three main topics of this exhibition to portray the roles that crafts have played in traditional festivals. Affected by nature and inspired by earth, these participating craft workers have also created many works based upon seasons and festivals.
