Gunfire and Cooking Smoke: Daily Life in Wartime Kinmen

展覽介紹：

海風吹過的早晨，硝煙尚未散去，炊煙已悄悄在村莊中升起。

金門曾被鐵一般牢不可破的疆界困住，整整四十餘年。然而，穿越從未停止。軍事意志設計的穿越，讓一張塞進水瓶的傳單，借著洋流讓口號渡海；連一顆排球，也因為可能飄向對岸而被列為危險物——看似鐵一般的疆界，卻不時被政治、軍事與生活所穿越。金門的婦女白天列入民防、受訓持槍，入夜還是得回灶前生火。 軍事的英雄式任務、漁人、蚵農在砲火的間隙來回討海，踩進灘塗，年復一年。

「單打雙不打」的砲火煙硝混合著炊煙， 日子還是得過。

展覽從日常物件與在地記憶出發，透過兩岸心戰文物、居民訪談與老照片，重回那段炮火與灶火並存的平凡歲月。

On mornings when the sea breeze swept across the island, the smoke from artillery fire had not yet dissipated, while smoke from cooking fires was already beginning to rise from village homes.

For more than four decades, Kinmen existed within boundaries that seemed as rigid and impenetrable as iron, and yet, crossing those boundaries never truly ceased. Military operations engineered their own forms of passage: propaganda leaflets, hidden inside bottles, drifted across the sea with the ocean currents, carrying political messages from one shore to the other. Even a volleyball could be classified as a dangerous object if it risked floating across the strait.
What appeared to be an unyielding frontier was, in reality, repeatedly traversed by politics, military strategy, and the routines of everyday life.

During the day, many women in Kinmen were enlisted in civil defense and were trained to carry firearms. By night, they returned home to tend the cooking fires and prepare meals for their families. Soldiers carried out missions defined by military duty, while fishermen and oyster farmers continued to work between periods of shelling, stepping onto the tidal flats and returning to the sea, year after year.

Artillery fire followed the familiar rhythm of "shelling on odd-numbered days, silence on even-numbered days." Gun smoke mingled with cooking smoke, and life, despite everything, went on.

Drawing upon everyday objects and local memories, this exhibition revisits a period when the smoke from gunfire and cooking fires mingled and coexisted. Through artifacts of psychological warfare from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, oral histories, and archival photographs, it explores the ordinary lives that endured during an extraordinary era.
