孫超先生民國18年出生於江蘇徐州，8歲時在戰亂中與家人失散，後加入青年軍，隨軍來臺，36歲考入國立藝專美術科雕塑組，40歲進入國立故宮博物院器物組，民國76年(58歲)獲頒國家文藝獎，作品亦屢獲國際肯定，創作媒材開始從器物轉向大型陶板的突破，營造更自由、更揮灑的藝術空間。民國90年(72歲)出版《窯火中的創造》，無私傳承他研究多年的釉方火表，陶板創作亦愈臻成熟，近年多以星空系列為主題，展現結晶釉特殊的魅力。

Sun Chao was born in Xuzhou, Jiansu Province in 1929. He lost touch with his family during the war when he was eight. He later joined the youth corps and followed Chiang Kai Shek to arrive in Taiwan. At 36, Sun was accepted into the National College of the Arts, where he studied sculpture in the Division of Fine Arts. At 40, Sun began working at the National Palace Museum to care for artifacts. In 1987 (at 58 years of age), Sun was awarded the National Awards of Art in 1987 (when he was 58 years old). His pieces started to gain international recognition. He also began experimenting with large ceramic plates, making breakthroughs and seeking greater creative leverage. In 2001 (at 72 years of age), Sun released Creations in the "Fire of the Kiln" in which he revealed his firing recipes he has discovered and studied over the years. Sun’s creations are beginning to mature, radiating an otherworldly beauty. He found inspirations in starry skies in recent years and successfully reenacted their beauty with crystalline glazes.

超以象外出自唐司空圖《詩品·雄渾》：「超以象外，得其環中。」意指「超脫於物象之外」也可用於置身世外、脫離現實的意思，結晶釉大師-孫超將陶瓷脫離形體，以釉彩繪帶往抽象意境，近50年的陶藝生涯，他不間斷地鑽研與創作的精神，正是工藝家一生追求卓越的最佳典範。
