Starting out as his elder brother Li Shi-Yi‘s apprentice at age 16, master artisan Chen San-Huo is the fourth generation of the Quan school of ceramics cutting and pasting founded by master Hong Kun-Fu. In his 60 years of career, Chen continues to create and innovate. His signature “break and see” technique replaces scissor-cutting with hammer-knocking and advocates following the course the broken pieces take him. Inventive and eco-friendly, old vases, wine bottles, clay pots, and other objects are given new artistic forms. Chen opens up a new path for traditional ceramics cutting and pasting, transforming what was once a decorative temple folk craft into creative art.
