- Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, best known for his “Pines of Rome,” rewrote ancient 16th-century of Italian lute songs into “Ancient Airs and Dances” (Antiche Danze ed Arie), a work with three suites. Suite No.3 written for strings has been particularly well-received with audiences as it breathes new life into ancient music. “Folk Song and Pick Tea Dance” by Chih-Yuan Kuo was inspired by Taiwanese folk songs, which the composer weaved into an original piece with local flavor. “Musica Dolorosa” by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks, on the other hand, features new timbres and textures of the strings amidst poignant expressions of deep grief and meditation. In this first concert to kick off the NTSO’s 70th Anniversary Celebration series, Stefan Hussong, winner of the Echo Klassik award in the category "Best Instrumentalist of the Year," will showcase the multifaceted dimensions of the accordion with NTSO Artistic Advisor Wen-Pin Chien in the world premiere of “High Way” by Romanian composer Adriana Hölszky. The dazzling display of Hussong’s improvisational dexterity and the diverse hues of the accordion will also be found in tonight’s “Five Tango Sensations” composed by master of tango music Astor Piazzolla, who fused classical music with jazz in this piece. Featuring an amazing showcase of musical charm and excellence, this concert is definitely not to be missed.
